Featured Neighborhood – Uptown Memphis

The Greenlaw neighborhood was founded in the 1800s as Memphis’ first suburb.  After decades of neglect, the area is making history again.  Once home to the former Hurt Village housing project, the City of Memphis was awarded a HOPE VI grant to revitalize and transform the area into a more socially and economically diverse community.  The City of Memphis partnered with the Belz and Henry Turley companies to lead this effort.  Rebranded Uptown because of its proximity to downtown Memphis, the community has made tremendous strides.

A new master plan has also been developed for the redevelopment of the western portion of Uptown, including the land fronting the Wolf River Harbor.  This area is called Uptown Memphis West and details of the plan can be found here:

In Uptown, a horse drawn carriage can pick you up at your front door, or you can ride the trolley to downtown restaurants, events and attractions.  Just across the A.W. Willis bridge (formerly the Auction Street bridge) is Harbor Town, which has amenities such as a full service grocery store, medical clinic, fitness center, boutique hotel, school and daycare facilities.  The Pinch district, a collection of bars and restaurants, is within walking distance.

Uptown is convenient to the Mississippi River Greenbelt Park, Mud Island River Park, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Memphis Cook Convention Center and the University of Memphis Law School.
